How do you put 2 boxing glove cakes on top of a boxing ring cake?

I am using sugar paste (plastic icing) and I'm not quite sure how to place the 2 gloves on top of the boxing ring (they are all cakes). Do I place the gloves on round boards, then cut out the boards according to shape and then place on top of boxing ring cake, as done when doing a 2 tier cake???
